As a child growing up in central Columbia, Mike Hayes utilized resources and services from many local community service groups. Those organizations helped him to choose a positive path for his life during his impressionable adolescent days, he says, and they also gave him hope for his future. As an adult, Mr. Hayes has dedicated himself to bettering his hometown community. He has been an officer with the Columbia Police Department for 16 years, and he is an active volunteer for many local organizations, including the Imani Mission Center, Destiny of H.O.P.E., the Columbia Housing Authority, the Successful Neighborhood Resource Center, The Intersection, and the Frederick Douglass Coalition. Mr. Hayes is also an honorary member of the First Ward Ambassadors, a board member for the Douglass Athletic Association, and a team member for the 13th Judicial Drug Court, which uses drug abuse treatment as an alternative to incarceration. Mr. Hayes’s primary hope for the P.R.I.D.E. facility is that it will be an accessible center where Columbians can find all the necessary resources to live a better, more productive life through counseling, exercise, education, or a number of other services. He also hopes to see P.R.I.D.E.’s outreach strengthen the cohesiveness and cooperation of all individuals and groups in Columbia as they work together for the good of the community and its children.
