Successful Neighborhood Resource Center

The Successful Neighborhood Resource Center (SNRC) was founded to assist the underserved and uninformed of Columbia with nearby access to resources and programs for those in need. The SNRC is entirely funded and operated by volunteers in the community, and First Ward Councilwoman Almeta Crayton serves as director of the organization. The center’s general mission is to enlighten those in need, give them hope, and provide resources for self-sufficiency.

Essentially, the SNRC is a community support organization run by those in need, for those in need. The majority of SNRC volunteers are low-income citizens themselves, a factor Crayton says is important because those served by the SNRC feel comfortable there, and they feel a vested interest in the organization, as if it belongs to them as well as the entire community.

The SNRC offers case-by-case assistance for almost any need imaginable at all times of the day and night, from job placement and housing, to conflict resolution and counseling. Volunteers also stress the importance of further education, job training, and long-term improvements in behavior and attitude. The organization also works on community services projects in conjunction with other entities, such as Parks and Recreation, the Columbia Police Department, and the Columbia Health Department, and coordinates annual activities of its own, including an anti-drug watch in August and a turkey drive and community dinner in November.
